Varna is the second biggest city in the Republic of Bulgaria, situated over a surface of 205 km2 with population of over 375 000 inhabitants. According to the Territorial, Urban and Rural Development Act the city of Varna is divided into 5 zones, one of which is the zone of “Asparuhovo”, situated in the south-east part of Varna.
Inseparable part of that area is the region of Dzhanavara. The remnants of a Thracian settlement dated back to 4th Century BC that have been found near the coast, as well as the Early Christian complex with its uniquely-planned Christian church dated back to 5th Century AD testify for the favourable soil and climatic conditions of the region.
As a residential area of Varna, “Asparuhovo” dates back its existence from the early years of 20th Century. The earliest name it is known by is SES SEVMES (“a quiet place”). In 1934 its name was changed to “Tihina” (“Silence”) for a short period, and in 1936 the area received its present name – ASPARUHOVO.
At present there are two hospitals, a couple of banks, two churches, three chapels, two cultural community centres, police station, fire-fighting and emergency unit, social care office, seven schools, four kindergartens and two day nurseries and there are over 29 000 inhabitants over a surface of about 2.4 km2.
Definitely, “Asparuhovo” is turning into one of the most attractive residential areas of the town. Varna is pressed by resort complexes and villa estates to the north, and the sea is to the east. The new town plan intends that Varna should develop primarily to the south. Therefore, “Asparuhovo” is in rather a beneficial position considering its natural resources and its closeness to the town centre.
